Bulgarian Rose Research Project exhibited in Place 167, Sofia
This exhibition is a part of the Artist Residency Program with the World of Co. in Sofia, Bulgaria.
During this program, I created the ten artworks in total. The original motivation of involving this Artist Residency Program is developing on my petal research, mainly focus on rose peal, which is also where the very first inspiration came from when I started my petal research project in 2018.
To experience roses bloom in Bulgaria is a good opportunity for me to see the whole process of roses growth, not just in the shape and style, but also understand why and how the roses became a symbol of the country and the reason why the Rosa Damascena could stand out from all roses.
In this research, I went to Kazanlak, is also a well-known place for cultivating roses. I discovered that the climate of Bulgaria in May plays a crucial role in cultivating roses there. In May, the weather there is usually in the period of dramatic change: Hot during the day and cold at night time; This weather condition becomes some particular element of the roses of Bulgaria to burst into its stunning magic. One single rose could grow 60 petals, and it will develop much bigger after blooming. These rose petals would wrap itself to preserve energy in order to keep the fragrance and the oil of rose at night. That is the reason why the rose oil produced from Bulgaria is one of the highest quality all around the world.
